i4j Interactive Video Q&A Session #2
Monday March 21, 2016. 10:30am Pacific (1:30am Eastern)

Curtis R. Carlson, Ph.D. Founder/CEO Practice of Innovation, President/CEO SRI International (1998-2014)

Today the media is full of stories about how artificial intelligence and automation will eliminate most job; about how a depressed, slowly growing economy is the “new normal”; and about the financial decline of the middle class. Innovation, in all its forms, is how society creates growth, prosperity, jobs, and resources for social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and national security. It is at the heart of addressing our economic concerns. But today most measures of innovative performance indicate poor performance. It is critical that we understand if we can significantly improve our innovative performance and, if so, how to achieve it? That is the topic of today’s discussion. You will hear why major improvements are possible. You will also understand how you can use the ideas described in your teams and enterprises.

Introducing Curt:

Our speaker today is Dr. Curtis Carlson, currently the Founder and CEO of the Practice of Innovation. For 17 years, until 2015, he was the President and CEO of SRI International in Menlo Park, CA. During Curt’s tenure SRI tripled in revenue and created many tens of billions of dollars of new marketplace value through world-changing innovations, such as Siri on the Apple iPhone. Siri was an SRI spin-out company bought by Steve Jobs. When Curt became CEO of SRI, although it had a storied history, having created the computer mouse and many other world-changing innovations, it had been in decline for over 15 years. Why? — because its innovation practices no longer matched the demanding requirements of our age. The resurgence of SRI occurred because of the innovative practices Curt brought to SRI and that he will describe tonight.

Curt has been a pioneer in developing and applying innovation best practices. He wrote a Business Week Top-10 book called, Innovation: the five disciplines for creating what customers want. He was a member of President Obama’s National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship and is currently on Singapore's National Research Council. His teams have won two Emmys— including one for HDTV. He is currently working with the US National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Engineering to help transform the US’s innovation practices and policies. In addition he consults with companies and government’s around the world to improve their innovative performance.

Here is a background article by our colleague Steve Denning on what Curt did while at SRI:
